Providing a student placement or internship can offer many advantages to your business. Placements/internships can represent an excellent cost-effective route to secure motivated and enthusiastic staff who bring new ideas and fresh thinking to your organisation. It also provides you with strengthened links to HE providers to connect to other business support initiatives.
You can look at providing a a discrete project requiring completion or offer students a general opportunity to gain much needed work experience across a range of typical activities. Students can undertake a range of activities including research for new business activities, writing reports; design and communications; administration; web development; and marketing to mention but a few.
A range of different internship and placement options exist across the universities and colleges in West Yorkshire, these include:
Summer Vacation and Part-time Internships generally take place over 4 to 12 weeks, and can be run as part or full-time projects. Internships are project-based and designed to meet a specific need of your business. These internships are normally paid. Check A View From the Hill example.
One-year Placements form part of some courses. Students undertake a year in industry which is related to their degree. Sectors and positions vary. These placements should be paid at a fair market rate.
Short term Work Experience for some courses, students are required to gain experience in a field related to their subject of study. These placements range from 3 days to several weeks and are normally unpaid. Check the Statement case study.
On graduation, students are eager to put their skills to work and secure a first step into graduate employment. Graduate internships allow you to take advantage of this with a view to potential long term employment of the graduate. These internships should be paid at a fair market rate.
