HEART in conjunction with Higher Level Skills Ambassador Ed Ryder have worked together to organise a series of high profile events branded “ShineOn”, a spin out from Ed’s Yorkshire Talking Heads business, inviting young learners from widening participation backgrounds to meet some of the most successful and inspirational business figures in the region.
Danielle Bateman is Strategy & Planning Director for MediaCom, the largest advertising agency in the UK and one of the largest agencies in the world.
Danielle provided the students with an inspirational story of her rise from working class roots to her lofty position. She stressed that this comes from loving what she does and being passionate about the sector in which she works but also from constantly learning. She referred to the foundations provided from studying for her degree at the University of Leeds, how this helped her to develop her confidence as well as knowledge and the opportunities afforded to gain experience with local marketing and media agencies.
Danielle explained to the students that for many careers in the sector degree subject does not matter too much but the sector is one that predominantly recruits graduates and therefore gaining a degree is the most helpful way to enter the sector. Once in, she advised there are no glass ceilings and provided you are willing to word hard, show passion and continue learning you can go all the way to the top.
The students clearly found Danielle’s input inspiring as she was bombarded with questions in the formal Q&A session but also on an individual basis at the end of the event.
The HEART team were joined by a partner colleague from Leeds College of Art and considerable enquiries for advice and guidance on the huge range of courses available across our twelve partners were forthcoming.
