One of our partners, University of Leeds, recently asked if we had contacts with business leaders who might be prepared to judge business ideas developed by teams of students from a range of schools across West Yorkshire.  The competition, part of a financial literacy project, received 22 entries and was sponsored by Santander.

We were delighted that three HEART/Leeds City Region Higher Level Skills Ambassadors were able to join the judging panels.  Jordan Dudley from Dudley Child, Aissa Gallie from Gusto Restaurants in Cookridge and Richard May from virtualDCS (pictured in consultation with fellow judge David Moore, HEART Assistant) joined by staff from Santander and the University proved to be challenging but supportive judges.

The judging proved far more taxing than expected as all the ideas and business developments presented were excellent and with true potential for growth and success.  It was excellent to see how many teams had actually designed and developed goods including production of prototypes as part of their business development showing excellent technical skills.  All judges agreed that the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated suggests a bright future for the LCR economy.

The eventual overall winners were a team from Wakefield City Academy conducted market research before developing a range of organic chocolate that generated profit and also provided support to Save the Children.  They backed up their chocolate range with branded tee shirts and mugs and a fully operational website.  A well thought out business with linked marketing and great tasting chocolate to boot!
