HEART partners welcomed Leeds City Region Employment and Skills Board sector representative for Engineering and Manufacturing, Simon Nadin, General Manager of Siemens Drive Chain Technology in Leeds to deliver talks to students during November.  The talks took place at the University of Huddersfield and University of Leeds and detailed the benefits of pursuing engineering as a career path.

Siemens currently operates from 28 major sites and employing over 13,000 employees within the UK and is an industry that is performing well despite the current economic climate.  Simon provided invaluable advice based on his own experiences in studying and working for both Rolls Royce and Siemens.  He detailed the importance of gaining as much experience as possible whilst studying, not just in the ‘classroom’ but through additional activities too.  Employers like Siemens are placing more importance on experience and looking for well rounded individuals with a variety of skills than ever before.  Simon advised students to get ahead of other candidates by seeking out volunteering opportunities that provide additional skill sets.

A question and answer session was provided after the initial presentation.  Simon spent considerable time responding to individual questions, providing sound advice, suggesting potential career paths that would be beneficial depending on the engineering aspects that the students are most interested in.

Simon’s passion for engineering and innovation was clearly demonstrated, the opportunities within the industry were addressed and invaluable advice was provided.  Simon concluded that students should seek all opportunities available to them, take on responsibility and find areas that they are passionate about.  “Life’s about change, it’s how you adapt that counts”.
